All American WR Calvin Johnson declines early entry into NFL; accepts Playaz job offer for $42,000 per year
Following weekend negotiations with the Playaz and NASA officials, Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson has decided to forgo millions of dollars in the NFL as a certain top 5 draft pick and will return to school to earn his degree, whereby he will then accept a job offer to work for NASA for $42,000 a year as a mid-level technical manager in their space program.
Johnson accepts a $100.00 "signing bonus" from Tac and a NASA official
"We knew that a college degree was of extreme importance to Calvin, and we convinced him that he could put his engineering & business degree to use with us in our space exploration program," Phil said of the ACC Player of the Year and All American. "Calvin will receive an intial base salary from NASA of $42,000, with full health benefits, a car allowance and use of a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, and will receive built in raises each year subject to an annual performance review by the Playaz," Phil added.
Johnson will be working directly under Tac, an experienced electrician by trade, and Larry Holmes, commandeer of the Playaz personal space shuttle, a spokesperson for NASA said.
"Plus, with Calvin's great hands, we know he will never 'drop' the comet dust," Phil said in a statement greeted with much laughter.
There has been much speculation on Yellow Jacket message boards that Johnson would return to Tech for his Senior season, pointing out the importance of education in his family and the need to "enjoy life" as a college student, which "only comes around once" in a young man's life.
Calvin Johnson said "I truly appreciate this job opportunity to work side by side with a great agency like NASA and the Playaz. Yes, I realize that skipping my senior year at Georgia Tech would have afforded myself and my family financial independence and millions and millions of dollars, but I really wanted that degree so I could put it to good use, and now I will be able to do that."
